Solve for one variable and plug it to another equation.

OpenStudy (zale101):

Are you familiar with using the substitution method?

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

kind of

OpenStudy (mathmale):

choose one of the 2 given equations and solve it for either "d" or "e."

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please choose one of the equations. Which will it be? (Doesn't matter which one.)

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

d=e

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle d+e=2 }\) \(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle d-e=4 }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

You can play with the second equiation. If you add e to both sides of the second equation, then you will get \(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle d-e\color{red}{+e}=4 \color{red}{+e} }\) \(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle d=4+e }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

You can tell based on this (on d=4+e), that d and (4+e) are the same thing. So, you can substitude "4+e" into the firt equation, instead of d.

OpenStudy (gokuporter):

4+e=2

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle d+e=2 }\) \(\color{#000000 }{ \displaystyle (4+e)+e=2 }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

this is your substitution
