OpenStudy (wilsondanielle):

Sperm cells and egg cells are what are combining, so it can't be either of those. What are the respective definitions of spores and zygotes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A zygote (from Greek ζυγωτός zygōtos "joined" or "yoked", from ζυγοῦν zygoun "to join" or "to yoke"), is a eukaryotic cell formed by a fertilization event between two gametes. The zygote's genome is a combination of the DNA in each gamete, and contains all of the genetic information necessary to form a new individual

OpenStudy (wilsondanielle):

and a spore?

OpenStudy (wilsondanielle):

remember that eggs and sperm are gametes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a minute, typically one-celled, reproductive unit capable of giving rise to a new individual without sexual fusion, characteristic of lower plants, fungi, and protozoans. BOTANY

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 1st one?

OpenStudy (wilsondanielle):

given that the process outlined is a form of sexual reproduction (sperm and egg cells fusing) it MUST be a zygote. egg and sperm are what joined, and a spore is a form of asexual reproduction.

ok thanks!
