5x + 2y = 30
x + y = 8

HI!!
OpenStudy (crystal_bliss):
hello i need help
OpenStudy (misty1212):
you have \(2y\) in the first equation right? and just \(y\) in the second one
OpenStudy (misty1212):
so if you multiply the second one all the way across by \(-2\) you will get \[5x+2y=30\\
-2x-2y=-16\] then when you add the y terms will go bye bye

OpenStudy (misty1212):
that is called "elimination" because it will "eliminate" the y
OpenStudy (misty1212):
you got that?
OpenStudy (crystal_bliss):
so my final answer would be -2?
OpenStudy (misty1212):
yes if you multiply by -2 the y's will go
