Why are the eyes of a lion set on the front of its head rather than on the sides? How does this help the lion survive?

OpenStudy (samwisegamge):

magic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Having eyes facing forward with a small distance apart gives them binocular vision which allows them to better focus so being a predator they generally have eyes set forward to judge the distance of their prey so they can remain undetected. While having eyes on the sides would give them more of an increased field of view it really wouldn't help them judge the distance of other objects as much unless they were moving but that kinda eyes usage is more for the prey to try and detect the predator then a predator such as the lion to find its prey and judge the distance to know where they are in order to be "stealthy".

lol watching animal planet really comes in handy sometimes.

OpenStudy (natasha18):

If you look, all predators eyes are set on the front of their head. All preys eyes are set on the side. Animals with side-set eyes have them so they can better be aware of their surroundings, and more easily see threats. Predators have their eyes in front so that they can more easily focus. Like Mgoz300 said, that positioning gives them enhanced vision, and better depth perception.
