In the story, the protagonist faced conflicts, including falling off a boat, being held captive, and running for his life. Take a look at this sentence. Notice how organized it is: 'falling off a boat' ' being held captive' ' running for his life' They sound even don't they? Very rhythmatic. That is what makes a sentence parallel. The sentence should feel like it flows evenly. Each section is worded similarly. Each word ends in -ing, meaning they are all in the same tense, not to mention they sound similar. Let's look at this other similar sentence: In the story, the protagonist faces conflicts, including a fall off a boat, being held captive, and a life-threatening chase. The verb 'faces' is in present-tense, but the verb 'held' is past-tense. They don't really agree with each other. In the listing part of the sentence, notice how each section is worded in a different style. 'a fall off a boat' 'being held captive' 'a life-threatening chase' They don't flow as nicely as the previous sentence. I hope that helps you understand what makes sentences parallel. Saying the sentences out loud usually helps you see if it has a nice rhythm. Happy Studying! :)
