T/F: Coherence in writing results when all of the sentences in some way prove the controlling idea.
@DreamCaster
Your thought?
I believe it is false. Their definition of coherence = a single idea expressed in a logical, organized way. I think unity is correct = all sentences in a paragraph pointing towards one idea
Well, coherent is defined as logical and consistent. So, if your writing is consistent and logical while proving your controlling idea, your writing will be coherent.
I thought that too... the definitions they give are odd, and they word things to where multiple options can work. So you think the coherent definition is more accurate?
I would say the coherent definition is accurate, though I do also see how you could think unity would also work. Technically, if the writing is coherent, everything would be working together in unity to prove the controlling idea.
I would need to see their definitions of both words to get a better idea of which would be more fitting in this situation.
coherence - a single idea expressed in a logical, organized way unity - all sentences in a paragraph pointing towards one idea
Ah, yes. Coherence "a single idea..." Unity "all sentences..." So, your question is referring to "all of the sentences," which hints to unity.
