" " 'Some kids won't talk to you if your pants don't have the right label.' " " 'I have great fashion sense, and I deserve to show it off.' Students at Booker T. Washington Middle School were upset by the news that uniforms would be required for the upcoming school year. Blanca Torres interviewed students about their feelings for the yearbook. "What is the problem you have with uniforms?" Blanca asked a group of sixth through eighth graders. Seventh-grader Ben Napoleon said, "I'm not the same as everyone else. I'm unique, and I should be able to dress the way I want to dress!" Other students agreed. Sherri Belo, an eighth grader, said, "I agree with Ben. I have great fashion sense, and I deserve to show it off." For her follow-up question, Blanca asked the group, "The administration tells us that uniforms will help ensure that those students who don't have enough money to buy designer clothes will still feel comfortable at school. Is this not a good reason?" Yanez Berrios, a sixth grader, quickly jumped in, saying, "If you can't afford designer clothes, you can't afford them. Why should I be punished for that?" But others in the group were not sure they agreed with Yanez. Seventh-grader Torrey Smith had this to say: "I think uniforms are a good idea. Some kids won't talk to you if your pants don't have the right label. I think that's wrong. Plus, I hate having to figure out what to wear every day! Still, it would have been nice if the principal would have talked to us about it before." Blanca concluded her interviews by explaining what would happen next. "As far as the school is concerned, this is a done deal. We will be wearing uniforms next year. If you or your parents have questions or concerns, you are encouraged to email the administration. Thanks for speaking with me today."

What does the first paragraph suggest about life at the time of Copernicus' birth? Education was widely available despite hardships. Education was available only to the wealthy. People did not hold education in high regard. Most people were educated at home.
Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Torun, in a nice home on St. Anne’s Street. The year was 1473, and life in Europe was hard for most people. Famine and harsh winters were normal, and many children and peasants went hungry. Because of his father’s wealth as a copper merchant, Copernicus was sheltered from these hardships. Sadly, his father died when Copernicus was a boy, and soon after, he went to live in the palace of his uncle, the Archbishop of Warmia. His uncle took Copernicus under protection and saw to his education and career. As a young nobleman, Copernicus excelled in mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. After graduation, Copernicus returned home to Warmia. He enjoyed a position of wealth from which he used his education and wits to aid his fellow citizens in times of need. During his early career, he wrote several books on law and business. When another country invaded Warmia, Copernicus was in charge of his city’s defenses. Despite his life as a public servant, Copernicus always maintained his interest in astronomy. This interest in astronomy led to problems for Copernicus later in life. Despite the great discoveries of the Renaissance, it was believed by almost everyone that the Sun orbited the Earth. As an older man, Copernicus disagreed with others on this belief. After many years spent studying, he published a book demonstrating that in fact the Earth moved around the Sun. The Roman Catholic Church was outraged by Copernicus’ book, and banned it. Because of this controversy, it would be many years before Copernicus’ ideas came to be widely accepted.
