http://www.usatestprep.com/modules/gallery/files/0/48/48.png What is the slope of the line segment graphed here? A) -1 B) 0 C) 1 D) 5 i choose B

OpenStudy (loser66):

yup

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Dear Heart, could you explain why you believe the slope of that line is 1?

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

I chose B not C

OpenStudy (loser66):

@mathmale he chose b that is 0

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

and i chose B because there isn't a rise/run

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

@Loser66 lol she, i'm a she

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Typo. Actually, there is a rise / run here. Try once more: Why is 0 the correct answer?

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

umm...because its in a straight line which would mean that its a negative slope which i guess means its 0

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Actually, the reason why the slope is zero is that the "rise" is zero. If you start at the left end of this line segment and move to the right end, there's no change in y, even though x changes. It might be tempting to say "there's no rise / run," but precisely speaking, we should say "the slope is zero because the rise (or change in y) is zero. Thanks for your patience with my questioning. ;)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Were the slope 1, that would represent a rise of 1 and a run of 1: slope = rise /run = 1/1=1

OpenStudy (heart_offire):

thank you :)
