Government without limit always produces tyranny. The idea of Absolute Monarchy (think Louis 14 of France) was based on the idea that god made kings. The reasoning was that if god made me a king then every thing I do must be right. The English were not the first to look at limiting the kings power, but they did get it in writing. The Founders had had enough of tyranny. Even with limits, George III and his government was more than they wanted. Congress was the first government of the US because it declared independence. They realized that more was needed so they set up the Articles of Confederation. That government system proved to weak and overly protected against tyranny> The Constitution with it's checks and balances and the Federal system limited the branches of government and limited states and national power. Still, many people feared a tyranny of the majority. That's where the Bill of Rights comes in. The rights of the individual are meant to reign supreme. Limited government is designed to protect those rights first while having enough power to operate the nation effectively.
