By the late 1650s the English people had had enough of Cromwell’s military dictatorship. Many people wanted to restore the monarchy to England. Describe the major events of the Restoration.
@Crazy_questions
Cromwell died in September 1658,and was succeeded as Lord Protector by his son,Richard. Howver,Richard was no Oliver - the New Model army (NMA) had been loyal to Oliver because he had led them to many victories,fought in the front ranks wwith them,made sure that they got paid in full and on time,and had looked after their welfare in general for over a decade.Richard had never done any of these things. The Protectorate regime was extremely unpopular - high taxes to pay for the NMA,extreme Puritan legislation,the country run at gunpoint.Rebellion was likely at almost any time (and there had been pro Royalist uprisings during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell),and one rising in Cheshire had already been crushed. So,the senior commanders of the NMA,headed by general Monck,got together and offered to make a deal with Charles II (which largely meant an amnesty and guarantee that they would keep their lands and property) to restore him to the throne. This done,Monck marched on London 2 January 1660,arriving 3 February.Parliament was then dissolved and elections held for the Convention Parliament (April 1660) 4 April Charles published the Declaration of Breda,agreeing to the terms of Monck (and other senior army commanders) for Restoration 1 May - Convention Parliament invited Charles II to return from exile as king 29 May - Charles II arrives in London.
