if your data is positively correlated, it means that the variables increase or decrease together. this leads to data that tends to be in a line with a positive slope. if your data is negatively correlated, it means that the variables go in opposite directions (as on increases, the other decreases). tthis leads to data the tends to be in a line with a negative slope. if the data is not correlated, you get a "shotgun" effect with the data, just randomly scattered about.
