Another Question Because of my sheer bottleneck in anything Mathematic
An observer (O) spots a bird flying at a 35° angle from a line drawn horizontal to its nest. If the distance from the observer (O) to the bird (B) is 21,000 ft., how far is the bird (B) from its nest (N)? Round to the nearest whole number. Ill draw it out

Zepdrix, hi, help would be splended
How do we know that the nest is directly above the observer? 0_o I don't see that in the description. Was the picture provided for you?
Im a bit confused at what you saying, i drew the picture, displayed exactly as is
trying to find x
i got 12,045 but i believe that is wrong
I'm asking if `you drew the picture based off of the information given`, or if the picture was provided.
Ahhh, im sorry, the picture was provided
So you said, hey, I'm trying to find the length of the side `adjacent` to this angle, and the `hypotenuse` was provided, so I'll need make use of Cosine, ya? :)
yes correct, i attempted using tan, which is why i believe the answer is wrong
crud, no i did use cosine
\[\large\rm \cos35=\frac{adjacent}{hypotenuse}\] \[\large\rm \cos35=\frac{x}{21000}\]
Agree with that so far? :)
Mmm, alright yes i do
i have it written down
@Zeronknight i saw you attempting to write a few times, can you also help shed some light on this for me?
x is being divided by 21000, so to isolate x, we'll multiply each side by 21000, ya? \(\large\rm 21000\cos35^o=x\) And mr calculator should do the rest for us.
so the cos of 35 degrees is roughly 0.819
divide 21000, into 0.819
Multiplying 21000, ya? :)
cosine you multiply?
If your calculator will allow it, try to put it all into a single line: \(\large\rm 21000\times\cos(35)\)
18977.53631
0.819 sounds right for cos(35degrees). 21000 * 0.819 = ?
lol i can't figure out where you're getting these weird numbers from XD
ohh, whoops
17199
3 numbers off from one of the answers 17202

oOOoooOOOOooo...flashy
hehe
@Thatawayz I am sure Zepdrix has this covered :P. @zepdrix Thank you for helping him! It's greatly appreciated! :)
thanks zeron too, without that flashy text, my iq would have reached the negatives
LOL, your IQ will never reach the negatives.
-___- sometimes i feel like it has
Nah, we're all here to learn. Thank you for using OpenStudy! :)
Thankyou for being soo welcoming
The only reason you were a few digits off of the correct answer is because you didn't carry around enough decimals from your cosine :) cos(35) = 0.81915204... not a big deal though
No problem! If you need me I'm here for you! :)
ahh i see
