OpenStudy (larsa):

One of the factors of the polynomial x3 − 5x2 is x + 3. What is the other factor?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You could answer this by dividing the polynomial by x+3, OR through the use of synthetic division, whichever is easier. I'd take synthetic div. any day. If you happen to know synth. div., here's the setup derived from x3 − 5x2, x + 3: -3 / 1 -5 0 0 _______________

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Notes: Please type "cube root of x" as x^3, not as x3. "Square of x" should be x^2.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Notes: I've tried this synthetic div. myself and find that I obtain a remainder. Obtaining a remainder indicates that (x+3) is not a factor of x^3-5x^2. double check that you have copied down this problem correctly, please.
