OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

What do you need to do to determine if the genes on the plasmid are expressed?

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

There are no answer choices as this question is a free response question.

OpenStudy (somy):

do you know anything about this topic?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hm im not sure

OpenStudy (somy):

like insulin production using plasmids have u ever heard of it?

OpenStudy (somy):

i can tell you the process and how to test if gene is getting expressed but i need to know how much u know about this topic

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

I know about ho genetic engineering change the plasmid by using restriction enzymes to cut the donor gene out and make cut so the sticky ends can attach together.

OpenStudy (somy):

Alright cool

OpenStudy (somy):

So one of the ways to check if your plasmid is working or not

OpenStudy (somy):

when you cut a plasmid and insert your gene of interest, you need to add one more gene sequence that will be beneficial for a bacteria

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

Like antibiotic resistance?

OpenStudy (somy):

for example a gene that would give a bacteria resistance to an antibiotic such as penicilin

OpenStudy (somy):

yes, so once you put that sequence and get the plasmid into the bacteria you need to culture it

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

That's reproduce it right?

OpenStudy (somy):

and your agar has to include penicilin or whatever antibiotic towards which the plasmid has gene that can resist to it

OpenStudy (somy):

that was you bacteria will have to replicate YOUR plasmid and get the resistance

OpenStudy (somy):

you will see it in your culture plate

OpenStudy (neonumbrella5115):

The way you explained this helped me so much! Thank you!

OpenStudy (somy):

if your bacteria is able to grow in your culture means that you succeeded

OpenStudy (somy):

or the other way would be adding a sequence from which you can get fluorescence emission

OpenStudy (somy):

that way you can actually observe it happening

OpenStudy (somy):

no problem :)
