Some simple graph/algebra help that this person need help with...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here's a picture of a diagnostic I was taking. I got that answer wrong...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the teacher made a typo btw. Its supposed to say pair not paid :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is given. I just need a why.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmm

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

why did you pick x > -12 again?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I graphed it and I went to (-12,7) because that was where y was 7. The line was shaded above it so I picked x>-12

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ok I see, now what it's asking :/

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well..... you are correct, about the -12, -7 point when x = -12, y = -7 and the part above is the "true" section, of the shaded one I didn't get the question at first, because, besides the typo, it also says "wich y-values" whilst is only giving x-values in the options anyway

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh true. Well I don't know how I didn't get confused on that. But why is it that I still got the answer wrong? Well it's the signs but what did I not do to get me to the answer?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

one sec

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm actually it should be \(\bf 2x-7{\color{brown}{ y}}<25\qquad (x,{\color{brown}{ -7}}) \\ \quad \\ 2x-7{\color{brown}{ (-7)}}<25\implies 2x+49<25\implies 2x<25-49 \\ \quad \\ x<\cfrac{25-49}{2}\implies \cfrac{\cancel{24}}{\cancel{2}}\implies x<-12\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That makes soo much sense! Thanks so much. I tried plugging y in but I guess I failed terribly and I came up with the weirdest answer. Thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

to be fair, the question can be worded much better so... don't sweat it too much :)
