Twelfth Night explores uncertainty and inconstancy in love. Which lines in these excerpts from act II, scene IV, show that Duke Orsino considers men to be more easily swayed by passion than women?
1 An elder than herself; so wears she to him, So sways she level in her husband's heart.
2 however we do praise ourselves, Our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, More longing, wavering, sooner lost and won, Than women's are.
3 There is no woman's sides Can bide the beating of so strong a passion As love doth give my heart:
4 they lack retention. Alas, their love may be called appetite,— No motion of the liver, but the palate,—
5 mine is all as hungry as the sea, And can digest as much: make no compare Between that love a woman

Too old, by heaven! Let still the woman take An elder than herself; so wears she to him, So sways she level in her husband's heart. For, boy, however we do praise ourselves, Our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, More longing, wavering, sooner lost and won, Than women's are. … DUKE: There is no woman's sides Can bide the beating of so strong a passion As love doth give my heart: no woman's heart So big to hold so much; they lack retention. Alas, their love may be called appetite,— No motion of the liver, but the palate,— That suffer surfeit, cloyment, and revolt; But mine is all as hungry as the sea, And can digest as much: make no compare Between that love a woman can bear me And that I owe Olivia.
What do you presume the answer would probably or most likely be, levils.
Can you pick more than one answer? Or just one? Because I can see a couple of right answers, @levils.
1 is a strong contender but 4 is what i chose
no just one that was my problem not to mention on alot of them its the text in between that really makes them stand out
Alright then,
Yeah I really think it is 2, he keeps on stating his feelings are wavered, unfirm, and more longing than woman... Those are all synonyms of 'swayed'. So I would suggest 2, though.
1 states she might be the same level of swayed by passion as her husband, so, I am not sure that is the right answer, remember, it wants to see what states mens' passions sway them easily, OPPOSED TOO woman, most and more likely saying men are weaker and more likely to be swayed.
4 a possible choice, but not stronger than 2. It lightly touches the subject.
But, it states what DUKE says, ohh, so that changes my view :o.
So it is either 3 or 4, because, 1 and 2 isn't in what duke said, in his category, so is this: " Too old, by heaven! Let still the woman take An elder than herself; so wears she to him, So sways she level in her husband's heart. For, boy, however we do praise ourselves, Our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, More longing, wavering, sooner lost and won, Than women's are." Said by duke or no @levils?
i believe duke yes
Ok because it didn't say DUKE: as the entery
So everything is said by duke? Yeah, if thats the case its 2.... @levils sorry for the mishap;.
however we do praise ourselves, Our fancies are more giddy and unfirm, More longing, wavering, sooner lost and won, Than women's are.
see i get that now the way i understood the question was that the passion men feel for women sway men more than the women themselves
but that is not so
