OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is the size and direction of change in velocity the initial velocity is 6 m/s south and the final velocities 3 m/s west?

OpenStudy (naveenbabbar):

\[It is \sqrt{45} at an \angle \tan^{-1} (1/2) west of north\]

OpenStudy (naveenbabbar):

Magnitude of change in velocity = Magnitude of (final velocity - initial velocity) And tan of angle= Magnitude of final velocity/Magnitude of initial velocity

OpenStudy (priyar):

i think u can understand better with a diagram in problems like these..

OpenStudy (priyar):

|dw:1453812012929:dw|

OpenStudy (naveenbabbar):

I think this diagram is wrong. The arrow of initial velocity i.e 6 m/s must be towards north to find the change.

OpenStudy (priyar):

yeah..i drew this to depict the problem..but that R shouldn't be there..

OpenStudy (naveenbabbar):

yes if R is not there then it is representing the given situation

OpenStudy (priyar):

now, they are asking change in velocity..so (final-initial) since they are asking for "AB-OA"(in vectors) we must reverse the direction of the initial velocity vector that is,OA..like in the diagram below..(forget the R)

OpenStudy (priyar):

|dw:1453812795787:dw|

OpenStudy (priyar):

here the change in velocity vector is given by AC |dw:1453813016748:dw|
