Can anyone walk me through the problem (3y+19)+(5y-29)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please help!! I will fan and medal!!

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

Are you trying to do foil?

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

Because then you would multiply the First terms Outer terms Inner Terms Last terms in that order.

OpenStudy (k_lynn):

Then you would combine like terms

OpenStudy (cjay99):

Combine the like terms, the 3y +5y and the and the 19-29

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Chick: First, please provide the instructions that came with this problem statement. K_L: Thanks for trying to help, but what you've just shared is not relevant here, UNLESS the problem was incorrectly typed in.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

See what Cjay99 has suggested. THAT is relevant.

pooja195 (pooja195):

To make this less confusing simply remove the parentheses then just combine like terms \[\huge~\rm~\bf 3y+19+5y-29\]

OpenStudy (cjay99):

and also use the addition and subtraction signs as positive and negative signs also for example the minus 29 is negative 29

OpenStudy (thebossofme191):

i'm doing this kind of stuff now

OpenStudy (cjay99):

same

OpenStudy (thebossofme191):

i dont like it

OpenStudy (thebossofme191):

but its pretty easy

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Some people would find it easiest to write in one column all the terms that have 'y' in them and in another column all the constant terms. Sum up each column.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thank you all that all helped a lot with the fact of just combining like terms and taking off the parentheses.
