OpenStudy (ohmath123):

Carlos is building a staircase from blocks that are one foot high as shown in the figure below. How many blocks will he need to build a staircase 10 feet high?

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so... any ideas?

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

yes @jdoe0001 so if on the 1ft high there are 25 blocks that means there are 250 blocks on the 10ft high block

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

25 times 10

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well... 25 * 10 is 250, yes but notice, the figure is a staircase, not a square a 25* 10 will make a solid square of cubes

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

1ft =25 blocks. 2ft=50 blocks .... 3ft= 75 blocks... and so on. no?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well.. we dunno are you doing precalc?

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

no its a problem solving class. @jdoe0001

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmmm so... well.. surely the class covered some topic for the exercise I mean... in a sense, all classes are problem solving, because you're always solving something

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

we dont cover anything in class. its a critical thinking math class. we are not taught any formula. @jdoe0001

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well.. hmmm critcally thinking class hmmm how are you supposed to solve whatever they ask though? I mean... are you expected to guess, or use some math formula or rule? have you covered sequences yet? assuming you've taken math for this class, since I'd think it's assumed

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

professor doesnt give us formula. we're suppose to figure these out. some us come up with formulas. some of us figure it out the long way @jdoe0001. every time we meet in class we discuss what we have come up with and we need to prove our answer

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

has to do with common core

OpenStudy (ohmath123):

so if in a 1ft there are 16 blocks does that mean there are 160 blocks in a 10 ft high staircase @jdoe0001

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

hmm common core? not acquainted with that 10 * 16 is 160, yes but that'd give you a square, no a staircase with steps

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so...hmm have you covered sequences? or done precalc?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

anyhow.. look at the picture that'd be a 10 * 16 but is not a staircase
