Look at 2, 4, 2. Can you divide 2 into 4? Can you divide the other 2 into 4?
Does this quiz tell you anything?
OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the LCD here? 3/5 + 7/10 Note that the denom. 5 divides into the denom. 10 with no remainder. 10 div. by 5 is 2. Multiply numerator and denom. of the fraction 3/5 by 2: 6/10
Then you have 6/10+7/10. Same denoms. Therefore, you can add these fracts. together. Please do so . Then go back to the original question and see if you can use what you've learned here.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok 6/10 + 710 = 13/10
OpenStudy (anonymous):
right

so if 4 goes in both, we need to change the fraction 1/2

4 can go into 7 1 time
Mehek (mehek14):
so what is the remainder if it goes 1 time?
OpenStudy (elite):
3

3
OpenStudy (mathmale):
sorry for the delay; you have solved my sample problem correctly.
Since both 2's divide into 4 with no remainder, 2 is a factor of 4, and you should multiply the numerators and denominators of the 1st and 3rd fractions by 2.
By doing this, you will have converted all three fractions to a common denominator.

wait what
OpenStudy (anonymous):
sorry im dumb
OpenStudy (mathmale):
No you're not.
You're adding 1/2 and 3/4 and 1/2.
1/2 could be converted to denominator 4 if you'd please multiply its numerator (1) and its denominator (2) by 2 each.
1/2 becomes 2/4. Same for the other 1/2.
So now you have 2/4 + 3/4 + 2/4. Add together the numerators and then divide the sum by 4.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok 2+3+2/4=1.75
OpenStudy (mathmale):
If you want to do that, it's essential that y ou enclose the 2+3+2 inside parentheses.
What you've written actually means 2 + 3 + 2/4.
What you want is (2+3+2) / 4. Yes, that's correct otherwise.

ok?
OpenStudy (mathmale):
Note that you begin with 1/2 + 3/4 + 1/2,
and that 1/2 + 1/2 = 1
So the whole problem boils down to 1 3/4, or 7/4, or 1.75.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1.75

But it's still very important that you understand the concept of "lowest common denominator" and know how to find the LCD>

You didn't type in the answers; I can't see them. But you are correct in stating that the answer is 1.75. 1 3/4 or 7/4 would also be correct. So I'll trust you to choose the correct answer.
