Add. A. B. C. D.

Mehek (mehek14):

add what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://prntscr.com/9xey6z

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Awolflover1

Mehek (mehek14):

you need common denominators so what is a common number between 2,4, and 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 maybe

Mehek (mehek14):

can 4 go into 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

Mehek (mehek14):

so 2 can't be the lcm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok how do you find LCM

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont remember

Mehek (mehek14):

list the factors of 2 and 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Look at 2, 4, 2. Can you divide 2 into 4? Can you divide the other 2 into 4? Does this quiz tell you anything?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well 1 can go in to 2 two time and 1 can go in to 4 four times

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What's the LCD here? 3/5 + 7/10 Note that the denom. 5 divides into the denom. 10 with no remainder. 10 div. by 5 is 2. Multiply numerator and denom. of the fraction 3/5 by 2: 6/10 Then you have 6/10+7/10. Same denoms. Therefore, you can add these fracts. together. Please do so . Then go back to the original question and see if you can use what you've learned here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 6/10 + 710 = 13/10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mehek14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@elite

Mehek (mehek14):

what number do 2 and 4 go into?

OpenStudy (elite):

hold on

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8,12,14,16 right?????

Mehek (mehek14):

how about 4?

OpenStudy (elite):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for four 8,12,16,20,24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right???

OpenStudy (elite):

yes

OpenStudy (elite):

electric_blue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Electric_Blue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mehek14

Mehek (mehek14):

so if 4 goes in both, we need to change the fraction 1/2 multiply by 2 because 2*2 = 4 2/4 + 3/4 + 2/4 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

Mehek (mehek14):

now simply that first find out how many times 4 goes into 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mehek got this -_-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 can go into 7 1 time

Mehek (mehek14):

so what is the remainder if it goes 1 time?

OpenStudy (elite):

3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (mathmale):

sorry for the delay; you have solved my sample problem correctly. Since both 2's divide into 4 with no remainder, 2 is a factor of 4, and you should multiply the numerators and denominators of the 1st and 3rd fractions by 2. By doing this, you will have converted all three fractions to a common denominator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry im dumb

OpenStudy (mathmale):

No you're not. You're adding 1/2 and 3/4 and 1/2. 1/2 could be converted to denominator 4 if you'd please multiply its numerator (1) and its denominator (2) by 2 each. 1/2 becomes 2/4. Same for the other 1/2. So now you have 2/4 + 3/4 + 2/4. Add together the numerators and then divide the sum by 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 2+3+2/4=1.75

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you want to do that, it's essential that y ou enclose the 2+3+2 inside parentheses. What you've written actually means 2 + 3 + 2/4. What you want is (2+3+2) / 4. Yes, that's correct otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Note that you begin with 1/2 + 3/4 + 1/2, and that 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 So the whole problem boils down to 1 3/4, or 7/4, or 1.75.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.75

OpenStudy (anonymous):

......

OpenStudy (mathmale):

But it's still very important that you understand the concept of "lowest common denominator" and know how to find the LCD>

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I wasn't asking you to choose one of those. 1 3/4, 1.75 and 7/4 are identical in value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Problem solved. Any questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so its C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?????......

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You didn't type in the answers; I can't see them. But you are correct in stating that the answer is 1.75. 1 3/4 or 7/4 would also be correct. So I'll trust you to choose the correct answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i will give you the link 1 sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://prntscr.com/9xf9ax

OpenStudy (mathmale):

very good.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

!!!!!!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, you did.
