Choose the controlling idea in the topic sentence below. In most Christian homes disobedience is punished. In most Christian homes disobedience is punished. In most Christian homes disobedience is punished.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

Here are the underlined words for the answer choices.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

A. Christian homes B.In most Christian homes C.is punished.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what a controlling idea is?

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

Sort of, can you explain it to me?

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

I think the answer is C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a controlling idea contains your opinion about the topic. It shows what direction you are going to take in writing about the topic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It might be A. or C. honestly

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

When it says "Christan homes" in the answer choice A. wouldn't "Christan homes" be the subject?

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

In the answer choice C. "is punished" is the verb so wouldn't that be the controlling idea?

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

Christian homes would be the overall topic that what you will be talking about.. what you go in specific detailed would be how disobedience is punished.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

So the correct answer is C?

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

which if you would actually going to write about that subject your opinion would be about why it is punished

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

that's what I think it is

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

I could be wrong but that's how i see it. do you think it could be C? if so why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So a "controlling" idea is an idea that makes a reader ask a question. Any time a topic sentence has a good "controlling" idea, the reader will have his or her curiosity raised.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

Oh Okie, Thank you both!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because I don't yet ._.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I kind of think it's B. because it questions the reader.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

This is what I was told about it: The predicate of a sentence is the verb part of the sentence and any words that go along to describe the verb. To find the controlling idea, find the predicate of the sentence, NOT the subject of the sentence. So look for the verb, which is usually an action word.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you get that from a book or something?

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

No from a teacher

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well go with that, I'm not a teacher =3

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

Well we figure out the Christian homes is the subject so cross that one out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yah...

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

In most Christian homes that's preposition you can't have a verb/predicate in a preposition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got to go bring my dinner up to my room, I'll be right back .__.

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

so cross that one out also, and you're left with one answer.

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

So then the answer is "is punished" because it has a action verb

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

exactly! although I think it's a linking verb but overall it's a verb

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

Thank you both very much! ^-^

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

I would like to know if you got it right when you answer :) i would feel super smart lol

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

and no problem :)

OpenStudy (shootingstar28):

I will tell you if it's correct or not, Thank you again! ^-^

OpenStudy (babyx3boo):

yay! and no problem. you are welcome to fan me and if you ever need help just tag me of msg me and ill try my very best! :)
