How did agriculture influence the economic development of the South and the growth of slavery?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Welcome to OS. The South was much better land for agriculture than the North. The South has long growing seasons, long rivers for transporting crops out to foreign market. In the North most farmers just grew enough for themselves and a little more to sell. In the South, farmers could plant much larger areas with out all the rocks they had in the North. Large farms, or plantations, that grow a single crop can be very profitable. But lots of workers are needed to keep it running. There seemed to be an endless supply of land. Free people usually didn't want to hang around and work on somebody else's land. So southern plantation owners looked for another supply of labor.
