Fertilizers contain ammonium and phosphoric compounds. These are macronutrients, and they cause nutrient pollution when they get into the water. As a result, a process called eutrophication occurs. When fertilizer enters the water stream, either because of erosion or as run-off, it pollutes the water, causing eutrophication. Eutrophication causes algal blooms. When bacteria try to eat away at these algal blooms, they de-oxygenate the water, which leaves less and less oxygen for the organisms, such as fish. Then, with little to no oxygen left, the fish die off. Thus fertilizers cause water pollution and this marks that they are hazardous pollutants.
