OpenStudy (graciek):

explain the difference between |-3| and -3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-3 is a position on the number line it is 3 units to the left of 0 |-3| represents how far `-3` is from 0, which is 3 units that's why |-3| = 3. Absolute value represents distance so absolute values will never be negative

OpenStudy (graciek):

thanks

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

More examples |-7| = 7 since `-7` is seven units away from 0 (seven units to the left of 0) |21| = 21 because `21` is twenty-one units to the right of 0
