A segment with endpoint X(-6,2) and y(-1,-3) is rotated 180 degrees about the origin. What are the coordinates of x and y?
A.) x(-1,-3) and y(-6,2)
B.) x(2,6) and y(-3,1)
C.) x(-2,-6) and y(3,-1)
D.) x(6,-2) and y(1,3)
Please help!!!

Ok have you graphed this yet?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
No..
OpenStudy (jchick):
Okay give me one sec
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay, thanks!
OpenStudy (jchick):
Now we know that the definition of a segment is a line that ends at two points right?

Yup
OpenStudy (jchick):
Here is your graph
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay
OpenStudy (jchick):
Now it says it is rotated around the origin what is our origin?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ummm I'm really not good at this at all -___-

Okay so do you know if we will rotate 180 degrees anticlockwise or clockwise?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Um, counterclockwise?
OpenStudy (jchick):
We don't know that yet lol
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh XD
OpenStudy (jchick):
We can graph the other points and determine it that way if it is easier for you.

Okay
OpenStudy (jchick):
So if we rotate around to point of origin from (x,y) we will get (-x,-y)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yup
OpenStudy (jchick):
Ok so from that you should be able to come up with one of the answers!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ummm so the answer would have a negative in it??

OpenStudy (jchick):
Well it would be the opposite of what you are given.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Would it be C??
OpenStudy (jchick):
Nope because it can't just change one of the (x,y) you must change both.
OpenStudy (jchick):
C is x(-2,-6) and y(3,-1) but since our given coordinates are (-6,2) and (-1,-3) we just need to change the signs on all of the numbers
OpenStudy (anonymous):
D??

Yay! Can you help me with one more?
OpenStudy (jchick):
Here I will graph it so you can see it!

I won't!

Here is our final graph!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok! Thanks me showing me!
OpenStudy (jchick):
Sure I can help you with another one!
OpenStudy (jchick):
When you are ready go ahead and post it.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok!
A segemt with endpoint M(5,9) and N(4,3) is rotated 270 degrees. What are the coordinates of M and N?
M(-9,-5) and N(-3,-4)
M((9,-5) and N(3,-4)
M(-5,-9) and N(-3,4)

OpenStudy (jchick):
Ok so 270 degrees is just 3 * 90
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oops! I forgot to put another choice...
M(-5,-9) and N(-4,-3)
OpenStudy (jchick):
Ok I will graph your question one sec
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay, thanks!
OpenStudy (jchick):
Wait it doesn't say where it is rotated from

OpenStudy (anonymous):
It doesn't...
OpenStudy (jchick):
Is it about the origin like the last one or about a point?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I think just a point because the word origin isn't there
OpenStudy (jchick):
Ok well I would need that point to continue with it.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So you can't figure that one out??

OpenStudy (jchick):
Well let's see if we can do it about the origin because it doesn't give you a point.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay
OpenStudy (jchick):
So like we did last time flip the signs.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh ok so it would be C??
OpenStudy (jchick):
Wait we only would've done 180 degrees!

OpenStudy (jchick):
We need to do another 90 degrees!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh, okay! So how would I do it with 270 degrees??
OpenStudy (jchick):
Well we need to do another 90 degree rotation. Because remember that it is 90 * 3 so we needed 180 which is 90*2 so now we need one more 90 degree rotation.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh okay so how would I do that to find the answer??
OpenStudy (jchick):
So now to do a 90 degree rotation is from (x,y) to (y,-x)

OpenStudy (jchick):
So from our 180 degree rotation we have (-5,-9) and (-4,-3) right so now you just need to do this to both sets.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ummm I don't see that on the answer choices I don't think...
OpenStudy (jchick):
Sure it is!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ohh! So it would just be C
OpenStudy (jchick):
If we apply that formula we get (-9,5) (-3,4)

Wait no!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok! Can you just help me with 2 more and then I'll leave you alone??
OpenStudy (jchick):
It would be B
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh ok

OpenStudy (jchick):
Yeah because we have to take the y coordinate and put it in front of x then change the x coordinate to negative. Since it is already negative it becomes positive.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh ok, I see
OpenStudy (jchick):
Ok so do you understand what we did here?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yup! Thanks a lot!

Not a problem did you say you have more questions?

Leave me alone lol I came on here to teach lol
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Oh yeah, I guess that's the point XDD
OpenStudy (jchick):
Okay so yeah go ahead and post them when ready!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thank you!! I'll post the next one after we do this one...
A segment with endpoint A(3,1) and B(-1,-1) is rotated 90 degrees about the origin. What are the coordinates of A and B?
A(1,-3) and B(-1,1)
A(-1,3) and B(1,-1)
A(-1,-3) and B(1,1)
A(-3,-1) and B(1,1)

Okay so I told you how to do the 90 degree rotation I will be right back. I am getting my dinner lol but try this.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok take your time XD
OpenStudy (jchick):
Remember that it is going from (x,y) to (y,-x)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay

Would it be the first one??

A segemt with endpoints x(-6,2) and y(-1,-3) is rotated 90 degrees about the origin. What are the coordinates of x and y?
x(-1,-3) and y(-6,2)
x(2,6) and y(-3,1)
x(-2,-6) and y(3,-1)
x(6,-2) and y(1,3)
OpenStudy (jchick):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
Is this one B??
OpenStudy (jchick):
Yes! That is correct!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Omg! I learned something today!!

Thank you very much!!
