Br'er Fox is the antagonist in the stories. He always has some scheme that doesn't work out. Br'er Bear is the enforcer for Fox. Br'er Rabbit is the trickster. He always figures out a way to outsmart the fox Tar Baby is a doll made of tar and turpentine as a trap for Rabbit. The more you struggle against it, the worse off you are. Uncle Remus is the story teller. Fox is the master, Bear the overseer. Rabbit is the slave. Tar Baby is the physical fight against the master. Direct confrontation only makes life worse for the slave. The rabbit outsmarts the fox and bear and avoids punishment. This is akin to slaves who would slow down the work, sabotage equipment or pretend not to understand instructions. These tactics worked for slaves, but unfortunately carry on as stereotypes of their descendants.
