how was martin luther king jr., influenced by the ideas of mohandas gandhi and henry david thoreau?

@Qwertty123 @ILovePuppiesLol

OpenStudy (abbyselena2199):

When Mahatma Gandhi was working out his concept of non-violent resistance, he was impressed by Henry David Thoreau’s advice to resist things that were wrong. Thoreau suggested that individuals could resist immoral government action by simply refusing to cooperate. Gandhi adopted many of Thoreau’s thoughts in developing his concept of Satyagraha (non-cooperation), or Truth Force. One of the most significant and tangible effects India has had on life in the United States was Mahatma Gandhi’s influence on the Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, who adapted Gandhi’s idea of civil disobedience to the civil rights movement in the United States. Martin Luther King always paid tribute to Gandhi as one of the most important sources of his own values. In 1959, Dr. King made a pilgrimage to India.

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

Mahatma gandhi believed in nonviolence so Martin Luther King Jr. was going to use nonviolence also.

ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):

Non violence. Gandhi was an advocate of nonviolence and proved it could work. MLK greatly admired Gandhi and preached non violence adamantly in his desegregation campaigns. Even when blacks were under attack by segregationist whites, King preached non violence. He felt fighting back against whites would just exacerbate the issues the whites had and give them reason to lynch the blacks and cause further harm to them. King was an advocate of it as he saw it work for Gandhi, and he was a priest who believed in the power of love and brotherhood. He felt that non violence showed love for the white man, and that without it, tensions would escalate even further. If you are truly interested, Taylor Branch's "Parting the Waters" is a great book about King and his Non violent Campaigns. https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080124200654AAo2UbP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why did rickey choose jackie robinson a the player to integrate the brooklyn dodgers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@abbyselena2199

OpenStudy (abbyselena2199):

When Brooklyn Dodger president Branch Rickey first told Jackie Robinson that he would have to wear an “armor of humility” to survive his initial test of major league experience, Robinson knew he would need it to ward off the racial intolerance and abuse that was certain to come from fans and players. But he never expected to see it coming from a policeman in DeLand, Florida, who stormed the field to stop a spring training game involving a Dodger team with Robinson in the lineup. It was a long and tormenting road for Jack Roosevelt Robinson from the time Rickey signed him in October of 1945 through his first season as a Dodger two years later. But that journey would be of major historical importance, transcending the simple borders of the baseball world. Robinson’s breaking of the baseball color barrier would become an early, defining moment in the struggle of African-Americans to find equality and acceptance within their own country. No blacks had been able to perform in a major league uniform since Moses Fleetwood Walker was chased off the field in 1884 as protests to segregate grew louder from white players and executives. The no-blacks policy, written or unwritten, would remain the status quo for six decades.
