Need help with similarities

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

i need to find the measurement of side GF

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

I know i have to set up a proportion or whatever it's called

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

\[\frac{ GF }{ CB }=\frac{ DC }{ HG }\]

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

i don't know what to do after that

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

@satellite73

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

You have to set it up correctly, first. Make up your mind which of the two similar polygons has measurements that go on the numerators and denominators... Because in the setup you created, on the left-side, GF is in the numerator, and GF is from the smaller polygon, but on the right, DC is on the numerator, but that's from the larger one.

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

so change the second one to be HG/DC

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Okay, great. Now, we have the setup like this: \[\Large \frac{10x}{30}=\frac{56}{42x}\]

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

okay

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Though I'm not really a big fan of big numbers, especially when they can be cancelled or simplified:\[\Large \frac{\cancel{10}x}{\cancel{30}_3}=\frac{^4\cancel{56}}{^3\cancel{42}x}\]\[\Large \frac{x}{3}=\frac{4}{ 3x}\] Bet you can do this now :)

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

i got x=2

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

but that doesn't appear on my answer choices

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

did i do it wrong?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

What are your choices?

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

24, 9, 20, 36

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

What's the question?

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Never mind uhh

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

i think its 20

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

since x is 2

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

That's because you're asked for the value of GF, not the value of x. GF is 10x, and with x = 2, the answer should be...?

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

20

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

i just remembered what the question asked for

OpenStudy (thefluffmuncher):

Thanks :)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

No problem
