Tina purchased school supplies and gave the store’s clerk two $20 bills, one $10 bill, and one $5 bill. She received $2.56 in change. If the sales tax rate for her city is 9.25%, what was the selling price of the school supplies?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

- 2 $20 Bills - 1 $10 Bill - 1 $5 bill How much is that?

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

??? I don't understand your question

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

like the way it's set up

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

As in, how much money did she give the cashier

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

uhh 55?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yep, So we take that $55 and subtract the amount of change given. That tells us how much the supplies was after tax

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

Can you help me set up the equation then?

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

And I'll try to do it

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

I don't know of any equations. I guess after you do the subtraction step, you would multiply it by the sales tax. The sales tax has to be converted into a decimal before you multiply. Then you can subtract the school supplies price from that to get the actual answer

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

52.44 is the amount minus the change

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Right. Now to find the selling price we first have to find out ho much tax was put on. How could you convert 9.25% into a decimal?

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

0.0925

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Exactly, so we multiply \[(52.44)(0.0925) = \] That will be how much tax was added

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

4.8507

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yep, so now to find the final price we: \[52.44 - 4.8507 = \] Rounding to the nearest cent, of course

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

4.9?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

That's right, but I would round after subtracting just for accuracy risks

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

okay thanks , can you help me with 1 more question

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Sure

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

George purchased a new blender and gave the store’s clerk a $50 bill. He received $6.30 in change. If the sales tax is 9.25%, what was the selling price of the blender before taxes?

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

so 50 - 6.30?

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Right on

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

43.7? idk

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

You're right It was $43.70 after taxes

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

(43.70)(0.0925) ??

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yep, good job

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

4.04 is what i get

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yes, I did also

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

so that would be the answer? $4.04

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

$4.04 is the tax amount, not the binder before taxes. We would have to do the last step like in the previous problem \[$43.70 - $4.04=\]

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

$39.66

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

Yep, that's the answer =]

OpenStudy (naudiapie):

awe yay , thanks @FortyTheRapper

OpenStudy (fortytherapper):

You're welcome. Good job yourself!
