Why did some Southerners say they were fighting against slavery? (if possible include a quote) I WILL MEDAL!!
they said the n word alot if that helps
Many southerners, myself included, truly were and are not for slavery. In the confederacy, leaders like Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis had stated that they predicted slavery would fade out in the near future, even if the CSA won. From this alone you can gather that they weren't fighting for slavery. At any rate, think about it- less than 5 percent of southerners owned slaves. The rest were middle or low class farmers just trying to make a living. Many of those farmers, specifically those who didn't own a lot of land, relied on working on plantations for the owners to get bread on their table. However, when the plantations owned slaves, it stopped the availability of those jobs for the average worker, because the plantations owners got free labour from their black and irish slaves. So, why would your typical soldier (who were almost entirely exiting from said middle and low classes) fight to keep slavery instituted when, in all actuality, it was taking their jobs away? They wanted to abolish slavery so a huge portion of the job market would open back up. In truth, the war was about state's rights and taxes. Southerners had more on their mind than slaves.
"There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil. It is idle to expatiate on its disadvantages. I think it is a greater evil to the white than to the colored race." -Robert E. Lee
