YES I know this is a biology question but I really need help How do seismologists locate the epicenter of earthquakes?

OpenStudy (vbcvbcbcvbvc):

THIS IS NOT MATH, NOW I WILL BAN YOU.

OpenStudy (stbest):

dont ban them

OpenStudy (vbcvbcbcvbvc):

yes i will

OpenStudy (tanabugg):

Oh my god calm tf down.

OpenStudy (juan1857):

The difference in arrival time between the two types of seismic wave can be used to calculate the distance of the earthquake's epicenter from the seismometer, as the further away an earthquake is, the greater the lag time between the detection of the S waves relative to the P waves.

OpenStudy (tanabugg):

that was from google lol but it still doesn't answer the question really...

OpenStudy (juan1857):

lol

this page may help http://www.geo.mtu.edu/UPSeis/locating.html

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the basic idea is to use the seismographs to figure out how far the epicenter is away doing it in 3 different locations will form 3 circles where the 3 circles all cross is the location of the epicenter

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

this is similar to how GPS works but it's done in 3D so you'll need to use 4 spheres
