Please help with this question.

OpenStudy (erak):

Okay if I made the numbers easy like, 5 pencils every 1/4 of an hour, could you answer that logically?

OpenStudy (grizwoldjack):

yes, by multiplying 5 by 4 to get 20 pencils per hour.

OpenStudy (erak):

yeah so what you're actually doing is dividing the number of pencils by the hour. 5 / 1/4

OpenStudy (grizwoldjack):

oh so 14 / 4/9

OpenStudy (erak):

And do you know what to do in that case?

OpenStudy (grizwoldjack):

which is 7/18

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

What I was going to say Erak! :) But you can also think of it as the rate \[\frac{ 14 }{ \frac{ 4 }{ 9 }hour }\] And that is literally telling you to divide 14 by 4/9.

OpenStudy (erak):

So if you look at it like \[14 \div \frac{ 4 }{ 9 }\] Do you know how to simplify it

OpenStudy (grizwoldjack):

actually 63/2

OpenStudy (grizwoldjack):

thank you

OpenStudy (erak):

Yeah that's right, so you'd probably answer that like 31.5 pencils
