Question in the screenshot please help!

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

A. 16 B. 8 C. 2 D. 4

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Fist divide the coefficient of x ( which is 4) by 2. then square the result. what do you get?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

what is 4/2 ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

I'm sure you can do that!

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

2

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

@welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

right now 2^2 = 4 right?

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

Yes

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so we put 2 in the parentheses and square it (x + 2^2 then subtract the 4 we just worked out :- (x +2)^2 - 4 = 3 now add 4 to both sides (x + 2)^2 = 7 and we have completed the square!

OpenStudy (welshfella):

So your answer is D

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

Thanks for the explanation and help @welshfella

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yw

OpenStudy (welshfella):

if you have anything like x^2 - 8x for example you divide the -8 by 2 so -4 goes into the squared parentheses and - 4^2 ( = -16) goes outside so in this case we have x^2 - 8x = (x - 4)^2 - 16

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

Will this be the same steps?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes exactly the same

OpenStudy (welshfella):

fist you divide + 8 by 2

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

4

OpenStudy (welshfella):

RIGHT NOW SQUARE THAT

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

16

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- and thats the number you add

OpenStudy (welshfella):

(x + 4)^2 - 16 = 15 (x + 4)^2 - 16 + 16 = 15 + 16 (x + 4)^2 = 15 + 16 = 31

OpenStudy (welshfella):

(x + 4)^ = 31 the number youi add is 16

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

Thanks very much i understand this now thanks!

OpenStudy (welshfella):

good
