Match the basic components of a nuclear reactor with their descriptions. 1. slows down neutrons 2. absorb emitted neutrons 3. mass of unstable atoms 4. concrete and lead enclosure 5. energy transfer medium shield nuclear fuel coolant control rods moderator

OpenStudy (instagrammodel):

which ones do you know already?

OpenStudy (codyhelton75):

none

OpenStudy (instagrammodel):

Okay, do you notes to help you guide you through this?

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

So, start with the fuel, and figure out what you know from there. It has energy in it, or you wouldn't be calling it fuel. It's not ready-made electricity, there are no lightning-bolts shooting out, so do you know what form the energy is in, and how to get the fuel to release that energy?

OpenStudy (codyhelton75):

@InstagramModel nope.

OpenStudy (codyhelton75):

@mjdennis no i dont

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

OK, so the energy in nuclear fuel is 'stored' inside individual atoms. Since there are one heck of a lot of atoms in the fuel in a reactor, we can get a lot out. Tell me about the parts of an atom and we can figure out where the energy is stored, why it doesn't just spew out naturally, and how the reactor gets it out.

OpenStudy (codyhelton75):

neutrons electrons protons nucleus...

OpenStudy (codyhelton75):

@Cas_fangirl_14

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

nucleus... nuclear... There is energy that holds the protons and neutrons together in the nucleus. That energy is like a wagon sitting on top of a hill: if you push the wagon (in other words, if you add energy), the wagon will roll down the hill (you get more energy out). The atoms in most elements are stable, so it is very hard to push them into breaking the nuclear bonds. So we want a fuel where the atoms are _______, so it is easy to break up a nucleus. If you understand this, you should be able to find the match for "nuclear fuel", right?

OpenStudy (cas_fangirl_14):

1. slows down neutrons -> moderator 2. absorb emitted neutrons -> control rods 3. mass of unstable atoms -> nuclear fuel 4. concrete and lead enclosure -> shield 5. energy transfer medium -> coolant

OpenStudy (mjdennis):

Or, let someone else solve it for you. Hope you remember.
