HELP ASAP PLEASE A football team lost 9 yards on its first play. It then gained 9 yards on its second play. A. What expression can be written to represent how many yards the football team is from where it started? Explain your reasoning. B. How many yards is the football team from where it started? C. Suppose that, instead, the football team had gained 9 yards on its first play and lost 9 yards on its second play. Would the team’s position on the field have been any different than it actually was after the first two plays? Why or why not?

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

what do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk an it is not a multiple choice question

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

okay....do you understand football?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

so lets say they were at the 50 yard line. if they lost 5 yards they would go down five which would put them at the 45 yard lin. if at that point they gained ten yards you would add ten putting them at the 55 yard line. does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

so if you were at yard line X and you lost 9 yards and then gained 9 yards, where would you be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they would be in the same place as they started right

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

yup. now for the expression...if you went back 9 yards and then added 9 yards to that, what is your expression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

I would say -9 (for when you went back) and then +9 because you gained 9 yards

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

so put those together and what did you get

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

remember how we said that they end up were they started?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

-9+9 = 0. -9 because that is them going backwards...let me draw it out.|dw:1463070927017:dw|
