OpenStudy (photon336):

problem

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

?

OpenStudy (photon336):

Find the equations of the tangent lines with slope m = -2/9 to the ellipse 4x^2+9y^2 = 40

OpenStudy (photon336):

@marcelie let's work on this one, it's finding the tangent line and implicit differentiation I think

OpenStudy (alivejeremy):

so u really don't need help?

OpenStudy (marcelie):

implicit differentiation

OpenStudy (marcelie):

dy/dx 4x^2 + 9 y^2 = dy/dx 40 so we take the derivative 8x+18 y dy/dx = 0 18 dy __ = 0-8x dx -8x ______ = dy /dx 18

OpenStudy (photon336):

I'm gonna be back in a few hrs. You can help too if you like Jeremy

OpenStudy (marcelie):

oh okay

OpenStudy (photon336):

D/dx 4x^2+9y^2 = d/dx 40 8x+18y~dy/dx = 0 Dy/dx = -8x/18y Dy/dx = -4x/9y

OpenStudy (photon336):

Hmm so m = 2/9

OpenStudy (marcelie):

hmmm so im thinking we might have to use point slope form?

OpenStudy (photon336):

This was my first idea I'm not sure but I know that the slope has to be equal to -2/9. So the first idea would be to set the slope equal to -2/9 -4x/9y = dy/dx -4(x-x0)/9(y-y0) = -2/9 Then we take a point x0,y0 that must be on the circle too so it must satisfy 4x^2+9y^2 = 40

OpenStudy (ijlal):

@Photon336 hey there buddy :) well i looked up ellipses and how to draw their tangent lines it something like this you can also verify the tangent equation by plotting them on graph check the attachment above :)

OpenStudy (ijlal):

there is no need to calculate the implicit differentiate here i thought we would needed to but we dont
