Help!!!

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Researchers posted ads in the newspaper to recruit participants for their study of a new treatment for agoraphobia (the fear of open places). 87 people responded to the ad, but only 60 of those actually reported being agoraphobics. Of the sixty, 20 were randomly placed in a condition (NEW) in which they received the new treatment. It was explained to the NEW participants that the treatment they would be receiving was promising but new, so they would be monitored carefully to watch for any undesirable side effects. Twenty other participants were assigned to a condition (OLD) in which they received an older, more traditional form of treatment. These participants were told that they were not receiving the new treatment but an older treatment that had been around for awhile, so the chances of side effects were minimal. Finally, 20 other participants were randomly assigned to a group (NO) that received no therapy. After six months of treatment, researchers found that the participants in the NEW condition were exhibiting 64% fewer symptoms of agoraphobia than before they started the treatment. Participants in the OLD condition were exhibiting 42% fewer symptoms, and participants who did not receive therapy exhibited 22% fewer symptoms than six months ago. Researchers were pleased with the results, concluding in an article they were writing that a new treatment had been found that will be more successful with agoraphobics than previous treatments. In a paragraph, describe why the investigators "randomly assigned" the participants to the three conditions.

OpenStudy (aklein18):

This may be because of a psychological reason (in some research, because a product is "new" consumers/patients may automatically asume that this product must work better than the old, and so trick themselves into thinking it actually does; consequently, this affects the results of the study). Another reason may be because the patients may have different levels of this phobia. Although the most likely reason is to compare the results of each (if the patients are = in the level of the phobia). The "none" is compared to the tests to see if the tests actually work as oppose to if nothing is done to help the issue. The "old" is there to compare to the new. If the "new" is no better or worse than the old, then this would be inefficient and the "new" would have to be discarded. Hope this helps :)

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

So thats the paragraph i put? :)

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

?

OpenStudy (aklein18):

ahh..?? This was for the question why the participants were randomly assigned, yes?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Yeah it said write a paragraph of why the investigators "randomly assigned" the participants to the three conditions. And i was just asking if i put what u wrote as the paragraph.

OpenStudy (aklein18):

Oh yeah, then yes :) those are just three possibilities. You could pick one or just put all three if you want.

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

I have two more parts to the question if u wanna help :)??

OpenStudy (aklein18):

Sure thing :)
