Why did the United States fight the Persian Gulf War?
because The US became involved, really, at the request of the Saudis. After taking Kuwait, it appeared initially as if Saddam would (and certainly could) continue South and take the Saudi oilfields, as well. So, initially, the US became involved in order to defend Saudi Arabia (and its oil supplies) from Iraqi forces. Additionally, the US and many other countries (particularly the UK, which had a long, friendly relationship with Kuwait) in the UN pressed for resolutions which found the Iraqis to be in violation of international law in invading a neighbor that was no threat to them. These resolutions were passed, including, finally, a resolution which contemplated the use of force to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait if they wouldn't leave on their own. In the meantime, the US and the other concerned nations helped to build a powerful coalition which included many neighboring Arab states as well as powerful European allies, and when Saddam refused to remove his forces from Kuwait, the war began. The results of the war were that Kuwait was liberated, Saudi Arabia protected, and Saddam's Iraq was hamstrung by economic sanctions and no fly zones. Several unintended results came out of the Gulf War, as well. initially, the US encouraged pellete and Kurdish populations to rise up against Saddam, but then backed away from supporting those groups, leading to very serious casualties among those populations, and deep distrust of the US. Also, US forces being deployed on Saudi soil caused many religious fundamentalist Muslims to conclude that the US was invading the hjoly land and that the Saudi Royal government was morally bankrupt. One of these fundamentalists is Osama Bin Laden, and he declared a Jihad against the Infidels occupying Saudi Arabia and the Saudi government, as well. And we all know where that led us.
or The small oil-rich country of Kuwait, historically part of the Ottoman Empire, was invaded by Iraq on August 2, 1990. Kuwaiti forces retreated to neighboring Saudi Arabia and appealed to the UN for help. President George H. W. Bush ordered the deployment of massive military forces along the Saudi border with Kuwait, supported by a coalition of more than a dozen other nations. Between January 17 and February 28, 1991, combat operations in Operation Desert Storm routed the Iraqi army and sent it fleeing back to Iraq. In the retreat, many Kuwaiti oil wells were set ablaze.
