OpenStudy (mathmale):

What is the probability, at the very beginning, that the baby will position the letter M first? Once that's done, what is the prob. that the baby will position the letter A second in the sequence of number blocks? Continue this line of questioning.

Nnesha (nnesha):

What's the probability of getting M ? { total number of letter m `/` the number of letters) take out one letter(M) now what's the probability of getting next letter which is A? take out A what's the probability of getting T?

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 which would be 1/16 right?

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

so it would be B?

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

I assume that's what you guys meant. Thank you.. I'll medal mathmale and fan Nnesha

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I note that you're adding probabilities. Why's that? Addition is the way to go in cases of "either/or," but here you're looking at four different events happening together ("and").

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

So my answer is wrong then? @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let's put it this way up front: If you add 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4, you get 1. It's highly unlikely that the probability of the baby's spelling "MATH" would be that great. Chances are 1 in 4 that the baby will choose M as the first letter of the word. That leaves 3 more blocks. Chances are 1 in 3 that baby will choose A is the 2nd letter of the word. In cases like this you MULTIPLY the probabilities together; you do NOT add them. continue, please.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

I'm sorry I'm just really struggling to understand this. So would it be C then? ( 1/24 )

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, that 1/24 was my result also. Thanks for sticking with me.

OpenStudy (fuzzybird):

Your welcome! Thank you so much
