just one quick question i will fan and medal

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

If it is a function then every x cannot correspond to more than one y value

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

I don't understand @Bobo-i-bo

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

For example, in the first box, what is the corresponding y value to the x value of -8?

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

34

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

yup

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

so it IS a function, if given every x value, there is only one y value. For example, in that example I gave, x ONLY corresponds with the y value of 34, it does not corresponds with any other y value. Do you get that?

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

i think so

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

So in other words, it is NOT a function, if given one x value, there could be more than one possible y value.

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

so the answer is A?

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

why do you think it's A? Please give reasons to your answer :)

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

im not sure im still a bit confused on this...

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

which part of my explanation did you not understand? :)

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

how are -8 and 34 related?

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

hmm, it's a defined relation. So this is what a function is: Before hand, I have DECIDED that if I give you one number, you give me a certain number back. For example, if I could decide that, whenever I give you the number 2, you give me back the number 6 etc. Or I could decide before hand, that whenever I give you a number, you give me twice that number etc. So for the first box, whenever I give you the number -8, you give me back the number 34, if you give me the number -6, then I give you the number 32 etc. Hmmm, does that help you understand better?

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

So if in one of the boxes, I give you a number, and there could be more than one possible number to give back to me... that's not a function because with a function, I give you a number and you can always give me back ONE and only one number.

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

I think i get it now

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

I got D

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

Is that right? @Bobo-i-bo

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

Always give a reason please. Why do you think D? :)

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

The X values aren't supposed to repeat in a function right?

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

That is right, the X values aren't supposed to repeat

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

so then its B since -8 is in there twice

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

because for every x value there should be ONLY one y value

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

because for every x value there should be ONLY one y value

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

Yes, B is correct, since if I gave you the number -8, you wouldn't know whether to give back the number 34 or whether to give the number 40 back!

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

okay i think i understand it now, thank you for the help, sorry that took so long

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

np ^_^

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

just make sure you understand, that is most important!

OpenStudy (isuckatschool43):

have a nice day ^.^

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

You too
