Does anyone mind checking my answers on semicolon usage?

OpenStudy (mysticfury):

Which sentence does not contain any punctuation errors? A. Your dog is quite muddy and it could use a bath. B. Your dog is quite muddy, and could use a bath. <-- C. Your dog is quite muddy it could use a bath. D. Your dog is quite muddy; it could use a bath.

OpenStudy (emily867):

looks right :)

OpenStudy (aveline):

I don't think so...

OpenStudy (aveline):

Remember, when you use a comma followed by a conjunction, you should be connecting two independent phrases. Your dog is quite muddy, and IT could use a bath <--- this would be correct This means that B is incorrect

OpenStudy (mysticfury):

okay so D then, it was between B and D for me, but i went with D cause my book says there needs to be a conjunction after the semicolon unless it comparing 2 things, right?

OpenStudy (aveline):

There does not necessarily need to be a conjunction after a semicolon. In fact, most of the time one is not needed. A semicolon functions almost like a period except for the fact that it usually connects ideas that are highly related. For example: The dog was wet; it had jumped into a puddle.

OpenStudy (aveline):

Btw, D is correct
