Use the image below to answer the following question. Find the value of sin x° and cos y°. What relationship do the ratios of sin x° and cos y° share?

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

First find the length of the hypotenuse. You can use Pythagorean theorem.

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

25?

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

a2 + b2 = c2 4 (little 2)+3(little 2)=c(little 2) 16+9=25

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

@anthonyym

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

3^2 + 4^2 = c^2 9 + 16 = c^2 25 = c^2 c = 5

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

Okay then what?

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Find sinx and cosy.

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

I'll do sinx for you and you do cosy. sinx = opposite/hypotenuse = 3/5

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

I got 0.01047178411

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

and for cos I got 0.999902524

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

How did you get sinx = 0.01047178411?

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

I punched it in the google cal

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

What did you type in

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

sin(3 ÷ 5)

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

the cal is set on degree btw

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Oh, but the question asks to find the value of sinx, not sin(3/5). Do you that sine = opposite/hypotenuse?

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

Yes

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

The opposite side to angle x is 3, and the hyoptenuse is 5.

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

I get that but when i punch it in the calculator I get 0.01047178411

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

sinx = opposite/hypotenuse. opposite = 3 hypotenuse = 5 Therefore sinx = 3/5. 3/5 is the answer because the question asks for sinx

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

so I don't solve it?

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Well, 3/5 is the answer. You're not solving for x, but sinx

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Now I bet you can figure out cosy. Remember cosine is adjacent/hypotenuse

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

okie and cos y is adjacent/hypotenuse. cos y= 4/5

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Close. Remember that you're now finding cosine of angle y, not x.

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

OHHH okay so it's 3/5?

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

and their relationship of the ratios is complementary?

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Yes cosy = 3/5

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

Is the relationship right?

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Yes

OpenStudy (dreamsawakes):

Okie thank you very much, I really appreciate you helping me instead of giving me the answers

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

No problem
