OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

Help please :) (I'm supposed to solve this using a graphical approach) Use this graph to solve the following equations x3-4x2=2x-8

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

oh wait sorry the equation of the graph im supposed to use is y=x3-4x2+3x+4

OpenStudy (phi):

what is the equation of the plotted curve ?

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

y=x3-4x2+3x+4 im supposed to use that to solve x3-4x2=2x-8

OpenStudy (phi):

so you have \[ y=x^3-4x^2 +3x + 4\] and you want to solve \[ x^3-4x^2=2x-8\] ?

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

yeah based on the graph or smth

OpenStudy (phi):

rewrite your equation as \[ x^3 -4x^2 -2x +8=0 \]

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

like e.g. the previous questions were easier like solve x3-4x2+3x=0

OpenStudy (phi):

if we add 5x-4 to both sides we get \[ x^3 -4x^2 +3x +4 = 5x-4\]

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

oh

OpenStudy (phi):

if I did that correctly, the left-hand side is your graph. and we have to find where the line 5x-4 intersects it

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

oh i see. thanks :D

OpenStudy (phi):

by eyeball, it looks like the answer is x is about 1.4

OpenStudy (wcrmelissa2001):

about there :D thanks!!!!
