OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

PLEASE HELP!! I will give medal and fan if you help!! There are 64 students in a speech contest. Yesterday, 1/4 of them gave their speeches. Today, 5/8 of the remaining students gave their speeches. How many students still haven't given their speeches?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Do you know how to start this?

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

No because the site that my school has me doing this on is no help. It makes me more confused with its explanations.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Okay, well. You wanna start by Multiplying 1/4 by 64. Can you do that?

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

16?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Correct. Then multiply .625 by 64.

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

The .625 comes from the 5/8.

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

.625 x 64 = 40?

OpenStudy (dmezzullo):

Correct. So then add 40 and 16 get 56. Then 64 minus 56 and there's the number of students that haven't gone

OpenStudy (starleeandfelix):

8?
