Write an equation for the line that is parallel to the given line and passes through the given point. y = 5x + 7; (3, 18) A. y = 1/5x + 3 B. y = 5x + 3 C. y = -1/5x -3 D. y = -5x + 3

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

THeres a little trick for this problem. Parallel lines will always have the same slope. The slope of the line given in the original question is 5. So their is only one answer choice with a slope of 5. Maybe you can spot it?

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

there* not their

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Remember that each answer is in the slope intercept form of y=mx+b. m represents the slope of the line.

OpenStudy (mellamokatie):

wait so what do you mean about 5?

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Ok the so question wants us to make a parallel line to the original line y=5x+7. In the equation y = 5x+7, 5 is equal to the slope.

OpenStudy (sshayer):

any line parallel to ax+by=c is ax+by=k where k is a constant. find k from the given condition. Then replace the value of k.
