OpenStudy (niuuu):

what is another name for the polynomial, based on the number of terms it contains g(x)=-27x^3y^2

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Recall in the sum a + b, a and b are called "terms."

OpenStudy (mathmate):

@niuuu How many terms are there in this polynomial? Polynomials are named also by the number of terms. What is the highest degree? The highest degree can also be used to qualify the polynomial. For example, \(x^5-4\) has two terms with the highest degree of 5, so it is a 5th degree binomial. See http://www.purplemath.com/modules/polydefs.htm for more examples.

OpenStudy (niuuu):

@mathmate would the answer be a binomial?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

To figure out the answer, you need to answer the first question the first helper asked: how many terms are there? The (other) name of a polynomial depends on the number of terms. monomial is a one-term polynomial, binomial is a two-term polynomial, then trinomial for three terms, and I think it stops there. With 4+ terms, it will be just a polynomial. The following link helps you find the number of terms through examples. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/polydefs.htm

OpenStudy (niuuu):

@mathmate ohhhhh dear god that makes it a monomial

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Excellent! Well-done! :)
