http://prntscr.com/badta3 http://prntscr.com/badtr9 http://prntscr.com/badtvs I'm not sure what they're wanting me to do or how to start. Any help?
The independent variable is the variable you control. The dependent variable is the variable that is determined based on what the dependent variable is. For example, the price of gas is $2 per gallon. Gallons of gas Cost 1 $2 2 $4 3 $6 4 $8 I control the amount (number of gallons I buy), so the gallons is the independent variable. Once I have picked a number of gallons, then the price depends on the gallons bought. I don't control the price. The price is determined based on the amount bought.
sorry, but gtg.
So gallons is the independent variable and the price is the dependent variable?
@jhonyy9 Here you go. (review what was said already)
sorry but i think i dont understand it clearly - @Loser66 please - ty.
@jim_thompson5910 What about you?
where are you stuck?
Let's see. Where do I start. Well, firstly, is gallons the independent variable while the price is the dependent variable? Correct?
yes in @mathstudent55 's example
but that wasn't the problem given to you
I'm a bit confused. I'm trying to answer part a first. You'll have to help me through all this though, preferably haha. For a, I wouldn't put gallons as indp variable and price as the dep variable? Alright, explain.
mathstudent55 put that as an example. Do you see how he set up that example?
Yes,
so just apply that idea to your first problem
The amount of sunlight is the indp variable and the height is the dep variable.
good
change the amount of sunlight, and the height will be dependent on that and change as well
Alright, for b, what do they mean by determine the graph to use?
well I think you're given a choice of pie graph, bar graph, scatter plot or something like that I think scatter plot is the best choice. Whenever you have 2 variables (where the other variable isn't frequency) and you want to compare the variables, then scatterplot is usually a good choice
Alright, we'll use that. As for c, I'm confused what the topic is? Would a title like "The height of plants depending on the amount of sunlight" work?
`Would a title like "The height of plants depending on the amount of sunlight" work?` sure I don't see why not
Or you can ask `does the height depend on the amount of sunlight?`
Sounds good! Do we actually have to plot the values on the graph, or do they just want us to distinguish which graph is best for each circumstance?
it doesn't seem like they want the actual graph
Seems easy enough. Alright for 2. I think the independent variable is the students and the dep variable is the jeallybeans I think the title should be "Amount of jellybeans consumed by different students" I think the graph used should be a bar graph Agreed or no?
You got all of that correct. Nice job.
Alright last one Hold on
The indepen variable in this is the amount of fertilizer while the depenn variable is height of plants The title is "The height of plants according to the amount of fertilizer used" I'm having issues with what type of graph to use, what scale to use, and how to label the axis.
I would use a scatter plot for the same reasons as the first one
Alright, what about the scale and how to label the axis?
what's the smallest x value? the largest x value?
Hm, I'm not sure.
what's the smallest amount of fertilizer used?
5
the largest amount?
40
so I'd make the scale from 0 to 50 that way you can see the smallest and largest amounts, plus everything in between I'd go by 5s since the left column is 5,10,15, etc
this is the x scale by the way
So the scale is 0 to 50 I have my title I know the indepen variable and depen variable I'm going to use a scatterplot Lastly, how do we label the axis?
don't forget about the y scale
setting up the y scale has you deal with the second column of the table
So I need a scale for both the x and y axis? The y one would be 0 to 17.3 right? Also, how would we label them? @jim_thompson5910
what's the smallest value in the second column?
11
largest value?
17.3
so why not go from 11 to 17.3 you can go by 0.5, 0.2, or 0.1 depending on how many tick marks you want to make
Why did we do 0 to 50 for the x axis? @jim_thompson5910
because the first column spans from 5 to 45. I figure 0 to 50 is easier to deal with plus we capture a bit of empty space to the left and right
Alright, sounds good. Now, how do we label them? @jim_thompson5910
you just place "amount of fertilizer" as a text label below the x axis to indicate that the x axis refers to the "amount of fertilizer" eg: x = 45 means we have 45 grams of fertilizer the same will apply for the second column, but just for the y axis
Hm, I'm a bit confused. @jim_thompson5910 Also, am I supposed to explain this to them or show them it?
I'd do both. Have the graph and just write a sentence or two about the label.
Sorry, I'm still confused about this part haha.
how so?
I'm not quite understanding how to label the axis or draw the graph @jim_thompson5910
here's a good example of how to label http://img.bhs4.com/77/5/7759E0CE60CD9D9116EB2E803B636253661DD275_large.jpg the x axis here has `hours spent studying` and the y axis has `exam score`
So it would go by five's on the x axis?
What about for the y axis?
`So it would go by five's on the x axis?` yes
`What about for the y axis?` I'd increment by 0.5
Alright I can make that But I'm not sure how to plot the points
are you allowed to use technology? or do you have to do it by hand?
You can use technology If you could show me that'd be nice : )
ok one moment
You there?
yes I'm setting up geogebra
are you able to install programs on your computer?
Yes why?
There is also a drawing pad here if you can use it
because it would be handy to install the program geogebra
it would be very tedious to draw it out by hand
Is that what you're doing? Your're doing it in the program?
tell me when you get that downloaded and installed
ok that should work, let me get that app real quick
ok click on the math apps tile, then click on the spreadsheet tile
in the spreadsheet, type in the data you're given
Alright
everything typed in?
Typed in?
yes the data values
I'm not sure how to work this thing
where are you at exactly?
do you see a spreadsheet and xy axis?
Yes
have you typed in the data values into the spreadsheet?
click on the cell in row A, column 1 then use the keyboard to type in the data value hitting enter will move you down to the next cell
yes but you won't have 45 or 50 in column A
Alright now what
ok select all of the values in the table then right click on the mouse, and go to "create --> list of points" http://prntscr.com/bafysi
let me know when you've done that step
I'm done!
