Can someone explain to me how to find x and y intercepts?
of what ?
x−4y=−8
to find the x intercept, sub in 0 for y and solve for x. to find the y intercept, sub in 0 for x and solve for y
ooh okay so can you double check my work?
sure can
so for x i got x = -8
yes...or it can be written as (-8,0)
oh okay! so for y i got (0,-2)
correct
thank you very much for your help!
oh...wait...its (0,2)
how so?
negative divided by a negative is a positive -8/-4 = 2
oh my bad, i forgot to divide by -4, i divided by 4
easy mistake to make...but u got to watch ur signs, they can really mess things up
yeah aha oops
You solved the problem and got the correct answer, but I think it's important to understand the concept, not just to know how to solve the problem. Think of what the x-intercept and y-intercept of a line are. The x-intercept is the point where the line crosses the x-axis. The y-intercept is the point where the line crosses the y-axis. The x-intercept is on the x-axis. On the x-axis, every point has y-coordinate 0. That is why to find the x-coordinate, you let y = 0 and solve for x. The y-intercept is on the y-axis. On the y-axis, every point has x-coordinate 0. That is why to find the y-intercept, you let x = 0 and you solve for y. If you understand and remember the concept, you will know what to do next time.
Thank you, @mathstudent55 i understand now and will make sure to remember so :))
You're welcome.
