@MysticFury

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

If you put in 0 for x, what do you get for y?

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

Y=1

OpenStudy (mysticfury):

well think about it, y isnt a set number, so that means there isnt a set solution, if x can be any number at all, whats stopping it from only having one proper solution i could understand if it was something like. 2 = 4x + 1 then there would only be one right value to make that true. but y isnt set.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Good. That shows that for x = 0, you have the point (0, 1). Now put in 1 for x. What do you get for y?

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

y=5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Good. Now you see you have point (1, 5) If you keep putting in values for x, each different value you put in for x will give you a different value for y. Each x-y pair is an ordered pair, usually written as (x, y), and represents a solution to the equation and also a point on the graph of this equation. From here you can conclude that there is an infinite number of solutions to this equation.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The problem does tell you that x can be any number. Each value of x, will give you a new solution.

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

so its B

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Correct.
