OpenStudy (nincompoop):

Can the base Guanine pair with the base Uracil? How about the base Adenine with Guanine? keyword: base-pairing, molecular biology

OpenStudy (sylph):

I know for a fact that adenine will not bond with guanine, as adenine will only form a hydrogen bond/complementary base pair with thymine.

OpenStudy (sylph):

A guanine and uracil pair is a well-known Wobble base pair. Not 100% sure if that would be an acceptable answer. Guanine-Uracil pairing is unnatural, but possible.

OpenStudy (sylph):

Ahh, I didn't even think about that before I typed. No sarcasm, thank you for correcting me. Just learned something new.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

if UG is possible then AG is also possible The key about non-Watson-Crick base pairing is that if Purine is paired with Pyrimidine, then it is possible structurally. It is not that Guanine-Uracil is unnatural because it occurs widely specially with RNA's (obviously since uracil is RNA).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Indeed all sorts of deviations occur in base-pairing, there is also "Hoogsteen" type of base-pairing involved in triplex and quadruplex nucleic acids (typically DNA, e.g. telomeric G-quadruplexes).

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

CORRECT. Hoogsteen is usually taught in biochemistry and not so much in intro to molecular biology or intro to molecular genetics

OpenStudy (help_me):

can u help me plz

OpenStudy (nagrcia23347):

1. no 2. yes (in RNA)
